Short Essay

Prompt: Do you need loving, supportive parents that provide safety, financial security and emotional support in order to grow up to be a healthy, happy individual.

How would you feel if your parents stopped caring about you? What if they told you that you're on your own? Most people either starve or become depressed. Children most definitly need loving, supportive parents that provide safety, financial security and emotional support in order to grow up to be a healthy, happy individual. Without safety, financial security, and emotional support, kids can be in danger and not be happy at all. The book The Glass Castle By Jeannette Walls, proves that children need children need caring parents to be healthy and happy.

Parents that don't care about their child can put them in danger. At age 3 Jeannette's parents let her make hotdogs in boiling water WITHOUT supervision, her mom just said Jeannette was "mature for [her] age" (Walls 10). Letting a toddler cook without supervision is extremely dangerous, the children can get very hurt like Jeannette or even killed. Also when Jeannette was in the hospital for her burns Brain fell off of the couch and broke his head open, Rosemary said, "There was blood everywhere, but one kid in the hospital is enough" (Wells 13). This is absurd because Brian cracking his head open deserves real medical attention, it could get infected. However, their mother has to be selfish. Lastly, Rex Walls decided to "help" Jeannette, by talking her from the hospital where she needed the medical attention for her burns. " A few days later, when I had been at the hospital for about six weeks, Dad appeared alone in the doorway of my room. He told me we were going to check out, Rex Walls-style. . . Dad hurried down the hall with me in his arms. A nurse yelled for us to stop, but Dad broke into a run. He pushed open an emergency -exit door and sprinted down the stairs and out to the street. Our car, a beat up Plymouth we called the Blue Goose, was parked around the corner, the engine idling. Mom was up front, Lori and Brian in the back with Juju. Dad slid me across the seat next to Mom and took the wheel. 'You don't have to worry anymore, baby,' Dad said.'You're safe now.'" This shows bad parenting because Jeannette was in better health at the hospital where she  got the attention she needed.

Also bad parenting can make children unhappy and even miserable. The Walls family was corrupt a Drunk father and a selfish mother made times hard. When the kids needed to be re-assured they're father actually cares about them they say, " 'You're ashamed of us?' Lori called after him. Dad just kept walking" (Walls 181). This shows that since their father didn't answer he is ashamed of them. Also after so many incidents of bad parenting and abuse the kids all agree, " 'This family is falling apart,' he said./ 'It sure is,' I told him" (Walls 230). The family is falling apart because of their drunk father and irresponsible mother. Finally, the kids are through with Welsh and their parents, they wanted to escape. "We told Brian about the escape fund, and he pitched in, even though we hadn't included him on our plans...Without looking for thanks or praise, he quietly added his earnings to the pig, which we named Oz" (Walls 224). They wanted to leave so bad they started a fund to leave Welsh, because they were unhappy.

Good parenting is essential in a child's life. Without it  they will be unhappy and in danger like the kids from the Wells family.
